CONCRETE DRIVEWAY REPAIR - OXLEY

Location: Oxley, ACT

Surface: Plain concrete

Service: Driveway Repair

Scope: Excavation & removal of existing, damaged concrete section · sub-base preparation · reinforcement mesh installation · replacement concrete section

A section of this Oxley driveway had cracked badly and lifted, leaving a raised lip and broken plates across the middle of the drive. It had gone past cosmetic. The homeowners were catching the underside of their vehicles on the way in and out, and the displaced edge had become a genuine trip hazard for anyone walking up to the house. They didn't need a whole new driveway. The rest of the slab was sound. What they needed was the failed section dealt with properly, so the problem didn't come back.

The Diagnosis

Cracked concrete is usually a symptom rather than the cause. Once the damaged section was lifted, the reason for the failure was clear: the sub-base beneath it had completely hollowed out. The slab had been bridging a void, with nothing underneath supporting it. Under vehicle load, that's a failure waiting to happen and the concrete cracks, the pieces shift, and one edge rises.

The fix had to start below the surface.

The Challenge

The failed section sat directly beside an established garden bed and a mature gum, on a driveway with limited working room. That ruled out bringing in machinery.

  • Hand removal of the entire damaged section, breaking out and carting the old concrete by hand

  • Careful work around established landscaping, with no damage to the garden bed or the tree

  • Keeping the remaining slab intact, cutting a clean edge so the repair tied in rather than compromising sound concrete

What Was Completed

  • Broke out and removed the cracked and lifted concrete section by hand

  • Excavated the failed, hollowed-out material beneath the slab

  • Installed and compacted new DGB20 road base to proper levels

  • Laid SL82 reinforcement mesh through the repaired section

  • Repoured in plain concrete, finished and tied in to the existing driveway

The Result

The trip hazard is gone, the lip that was catching vehicles is gone, and the new section sits flush with the surrounding slab. More importantly, it's sitting on a compacted base and steel mesh rather than a void — so this section will now outlast the concrete around it.

FAQ

Can a cracked driveway be repaired without replacing the whole thing?

Often, yes. Where the surrounding slab is sound, replacing just the failed section is a far more cost-effective option than a full replacement. A site assessment determines whether a section repair or full replacement is the right call for your driveway.

Why does concrete crack and lift?

Most commonly because the base underneath has moved, eroded, or washed out. Once the slab loses its support, vehicle load does the rest. It can also be caused by tree root movement, poor original preparation, or inadequate reinforcement. Fixing the surface without addressing the base means the crack comes back.

What is DGB20 and SL82?

DGB20 is a 20mm dense graded road base — the compacted material that supports the slab. SL82 is a square reinforcing mesh that holds the concrete together under load. Both are standard specification for a driveway built to last.

Will the repaired section match the rest of the driveway?

New concrete will always be lighter than an aged slab initially. It weathers and tones down over the following months. The join is cut and finished to sit flush, so the repair reads as part of the driveway rather than a patch.

How long does a driveway section repair take?

Most section repairs are completed in a day or two, followed by curing time before the driveway can take vehicle traffic again.
